How to Style Flannel
HI! LET'S GET STARTED WITH EXPLAINING WHAT IS FLANNEL:
Flannel is a woven fabric most typically made from wool or cotton that is a slightly raised texture that is warm and soft to the touch when you are wearing it.
What is the difference between Plaid and Flannel????
Plaid is a pattern and flannel is a fabric.
Flannel shirts can be plaid shirts–and plaid shirts can be flannel–but flannel and plaid are different concepts.
I would not get hung up on their definition. I just wanted to address their differences to educate you so that when you are buying and styling you have a foundation with the article of clothing you are creating a look with!!
In this article, I will be featuring outfits in both the plaid pattern and the fabric flannel. We all have both in our closet and need INSP. for them.

How to Mix Flannels with Different Textures: Knits, Leather (Faux/Real) & Denim
STYLING FLANNEL WITH KNITS:
LOOK 1: Tunic (Long) Style Flannel shirt styled as a dress.
STYLE TIP: To mimic this look choose a short or cropped sweater. It will compliment you the most when your sweater falls at the smallest part of your waist. Bc, we are still in winter I paired it with high boots and bare legs. If it is a cold winter day just add tights!
LOOK 2: Tunic (Long) Style Flannel shirt styled as a dress with a cozy longer sweater overtop. This is perfect office wear!
LOOK 3: Tunic (Long) Style Flannel shirt styled as a shirt with my knit skirt overtop.
NOTE: This top can easily be worn unbuttoned with your graphic tee + knit long cardigan overtop + skinny jeans and ankle boots.

STYLING FLANNEL WITH LEATHER:
LOOK 1: This oversized shirt worked well with this leather midi-skirt because when tucked in I do not lose my shape. The skirt and top meet at the smallest part of my waist making this combo work!
STYLE TIP: When tucking in your oversized shirts… button down till you greet the top of your pants or skirt and leave the bottom half unbuttoned. Then, take the left flap and firmly pull it across your body and tuck it into the right side of your bottoms and then do the same for the other side. You are overdirecting the unbuttoned flaps to remove bulk and creating a polished look so you can extend the options for your oversized tops!
LOOK 2: Buy items that suit your personality! This dress is probably 10+ years old. The reason I can still wear it is that buffalo plaid is timeless and the faux leather sleeves are still in.
STYLE TIP: With your bodycon dresses like this add an oversized sweater to create to look of a skirt!
LOOK 3: Wear your top unbuttoned with your leather mini-skirt making this ensemble relaxed & polished
STYLING FLANNEL WITH DENIM:
8 Ways You can wear Denim with your Flannel pieces:
1. Button it up & tuck it in for a smart casual look.
2. Keep it unbuttoned. Unbuttoned it looks so chic with high-waist jeans. You can choose wide-leg, skinny, mom, and boyfriend-style denim. Layer with a bodysuit, tank-top, long-sleeve tee, graphic tee, or crop top.
3. Go big and bold with a big earring, popped collar, unbuttoned to peek-a-boo some cleavage, and tuck into your favorite jeans. Your denim can be mid-wash, dark, distressed, or, black.
4. Go for the grunge flannel aesthetic buttoning up your oversized shirt with your wide-leg denim and combat boots.
5. Take your look to a chic level pairing it with your leather blazer or moto jacket.
6. Create a sleek, comfortable, cozy look with your oversized cardigan. layered over top of your flannel. Tucked-in, unbuttoned or untucked is all great options.
7. Swap out your plaid flannel shirt for a flannel jacket.
8. Switch up your shoe game: sneakers with your wide-leg denim, heels with your mom jean, midi-boots with your straight-leg denim tucked into your boot (so edgy and chic)
HOW TO STYLE FLANNEL WITH YOUR T-SHIRT:
Wearing your flannel shirt open over your favorite tee is a great effortless look.
Choose any tee you want!
I featured my favorite Star Wars graphic tee. Styles of t-shirts you can choose from are a mock turtle neck, scoop neck, square neckline top, or crew neck style tee with this look.
WANT A POLISHED LOOK?: Switch it up and button up your top and underneath wear a turtleneck long sleeve underneath with a bulky gold hoop.
FOR A BOLD, EDGY LOOK: Button up your flannel (not oversized for less material) and wear a corset overtop!! This look is so edgy and sassy. Super fun and bold. If you wear it, send me a pic!! I love celebrating bold moves!!!
HOW TO STYLE AN OVERSIZED FLANNEL:
You have 3 ways you can wear your oversized flannel!
1. Unbuttoned as I featured for you with the tee above.
2. Buttoned with Biker shorts, a ball cap, and sneakers. So, Kim K. And if you are not a fan of hers, I understand, but don’t let it deter you from rocking this look!
3. Buttoned styled as a dress with Over-the-Knee Boots (OTK).
STEP 1: Fold over the collar to the inside of your shirt. When it is folded it will look level with the sleeves creating a long line across the back of your body. (see pic)
STEP 2: Place the collar in the middle of your back or the smallest part of your waist. Extend the sleeves of the shirt, tension taught on both sides of your body.
STEP 3: Pull in the sleeves towards the front of your body ad twist them getting ready to tie them in a knot.
STEP 4: Tie sleeves in a knot. Button it up & tuck it in for a smart casual look.
STEP 5: If the knot you tied looks too bulky or protruding too far off of your body just reposition the sleeve that is sticking out by tucking it behind your knot towards your body so it flows and looks like the picture.
STEP 6: Enjoy wearing this look! I showed you how to tie a flannel shirt over a bodycon-style dress.
STYLE TIP: A tight knot at the small of your waist is great when tieing your flannel around your waist with a midi-skirt, bodycon dress, pencil skirt, shorts, trousers, or jeans with a high waist.
When wearing mid-rise or low-rise jeans. Tie your flannel the same way BUT, tie the shirt at the waistline of your chosen bottoms!
HOW TO MIX DIFFERENT PRINTS WITH FLANNEL (POLKA-DOTS, STRIPES & FLORAL)
ELEVATE YOUR LOOK STYLING FLANNEL WITH DIFFERENT PRINTS!
Let’s talk about how to style patterns without clashing: truly there is no real rule on how not to clash… You can style two types of plaid together or two florals— the main thing to remember is to match at least 1 color from each item. So if navy is in both ( like the floral + plaid look above) they look so great together!
It can be intimidating creating outfits with patterns (Leopard print, gingham, checkers, polka dots, stripes, paisley, plaid…), prints (stripes), and florals so trust your gut, your creativity and go bold or subtle. The main goal is that you stay true to yourself and your personal style!
When you do style them together you are maximizing & expanding your outfit options!
