Styles of Jeans  (aka Your Go-To Jean Guide):

Let’s break down the denim styles that are worth your time (and closet space). Each of these can work beautifully for women over 40—it’s just about choosing the right fit for your shape, lifestyle, and confidence level.

Here are the styles I recommend the most in client sessions, along with tips on how to wear each:

Straight-Leg Jeans

Why we love them:

Classic, clean, and endlessly versatile. They skim (not cling!) and give structure without being stiff.  They're polished enough for work, but still easy-going for weekend errands. Think of these as your capsule wardrobe MVP.

Great for:

Almost every body shape—especially apple, hourglass, and rectangle.

Try:
🇨🇦 Aritzia's "The Effortless Pant–Denim" (a cult favourite), Levi’s 314 Shaping Straight or Mavi's Kathleen
🇺🇸 Levi’s 501s, Madewell Perfect Vintage Jean, or Levi’s 314 Shaping Straight

Bootcut Jeans

Why we love them:

They balance out hips, make your legs look a mile long, and pair beautifully with boots or heels.

Great for:

Pear-shaped, curvy, hourglass, and tall figures.

Try:
🇨🇦 Silver Jeans Co. (Canadian classic!), WARP & WEFT
🇺🇸 Kut from the Kloth “Natalie” or NYDJ "Barbara Bootcut"

Wide-Leg Jeans

Why we love them:

This is the power move. Structured wide-legs elevate everything—blouses, blazers, even a tee. Add a belt and suddenly you’re in your boss era.
Super comfy, fashion-forward, and a dream on straighter or tall frames.

Great for:

Rectangle, apple, tall, or plus-size shapes.

Try:
🇨🇦 RW&CO Wide-Leg High-Rise Jean, or Reitmans’ Sculpting Wide Leg Jeans.
🇺🇸 Good American “Good Waist Palazzo”, Warp + Weft "NELLA",  orEverlane’s Way-High Wide Leg

Skinny Jeans (yes, still!)

Why we love them:

A classic that works hard under tunics, blazers, and longer layers—especially when you want to show off boots.

Great for:

Petites, hourglass, curvy, and those who want structure.

Try:
🇨🇦 SPANX Skinny Jean (Pull-On, Shaping!)
🇺🇸 Wit & Wisdom Ab-solution Skinny or Levi’s 311 Shaping Skinny

Flare Jeans

Why we love them:

Drama in the best way. These cinch the waist and bring out that vintage vibe while balancing curves beautifully.

Great for:

Tall, hourglass, or curvy figures.

Try:
🇨🇦 Frank and Oak “Flares with Organic Cotton” or WARP & WEFT
🇺🇸 Mother Denim “The Weekender” or Madewell Flare

Barrel Jeans (your new secret weapon)

Why we love them:

A modern twist on relaxed denim. Tapered at the ankle with volume at the thigh—super cool without trying too hard.

Great for:

Rectangle, apple, tall, and style risk-takers over 40 who want edge with comfort

Try:
🇨🇦 Oak + Fort Barrel Jeans or Dynamite High-Rise Barrel Jeans
🇺🇸 Everlane "The Barrel Jean" or Warp + Weft “Luna”

Pro tip: Pair with a slim or tucked-in top to balance proportions and show off your waist.

Ankle Cropped Jeans

Why we love them:

Great for showing off a cute shoe and keeping things modern. Cropped styles with a bit of stretch look especially good with a slim ankle boot or sleek flat. These show off your shoes and keep proportions flattering—especially great when full-length jeans bunch up.

Great for:

Petite, apple, hourglass, and rectangle.

Try:
🇨🇦 Simons “Twik Cropped Jeans”, Silver Jeans Co. Most Wanted High Rise Crop. or Joe Fresh Ankle Jeans
🇺🇸 Madewell “The Perfect Vintage Crop” or SPANX “Ankle-Length Flare”

Pro tip: These are also perfect transition jeans for spring/fall—and they give just the right amount of ankle for a sleek look with flats, sock boots or, booties.

Who Makes the Best Jeans for Older Women?

The truth is: that great jeans do exist—and they’re designed with you in mind.

Look for brands that prioritize stretch, comfort, and shaping technology—without looking like "mom jeans" (unless you’re going for that look intentionally, of course).

Here are some of my tried-and-true favourite brands that consistently deliver for women over 40:

  • NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans): Their signature lift-tuck technology smooths the tummy and lifts the booty—without ever feeling tight or restrictive. A client fave for a reason.

  • Wit & Wisdom: Affordable, ultra-flattering, and designed with Ab-solution panels that offer support where you want it most (yes please!).

  • Kut from the Kloth: Their denim has just the right amount of stretch, and the cuts are incredibly forgiving and polished.

  • SPANX: Yes, that Spanx! Their denim line is a hidden gem—pull-on styles with shaping magic built right in. You’ll feel sleek, lifted, and totally comfortable.

  • WARP + WEFT: If you want inclusive sizing, sustainable practices, and denim that feels modern but fits like a dream, this brand is for you. Their curve and plus collections are especially amazing.

  • Good American: Designed with curves in mind, these jeans don’t gap at the waist, and they hug all the right places—plus their size range is one of the best out there.

  • Madewell & Levi’s: If you're looking for timeless, everyday jeans, both brands deliver solid high-rise and straight-leg options that work great for a wide range of body shapes.

Remember, the best jeans for you are the ones that fit your body, lifestyle, and confidence. These brands just happen to make the hunt a whole lot easier.

For All-Around Fit + Flattery (Everyday Go-To Brands):

These brands consistently deliver high-rise comfort, tummy control, and curve-friendly cuts:

  • 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans) – Their lift-tuck technology is magic for smoothing without squeezing.

  • 🇺🇸 Kut from the Kloth – Mid- and high-rise options in modern styles that feel age-inclusive.

  • 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 Silver Jeans Co. – Canadian fave for dependable stretch and a flattering fit, especially for curves.

  • 🇺🇸 Wit & Wisdom – Their “Ab-solution” line has built-in shaping panels and extra stretch at the waist.

  • 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 SPANX Denim – Pull-on jeans with tummy control and comfort? Yes, please. Great under blazers or tunics.

  • 🇺🇸 🇨🇦Warp + Weft – Inclusive sizing (00–24), eco-friendly fabrics, and body-hugging cuts made to last.

For Curvy Women:

If you have hips, booty, or thighs that don’t love a one-size-fits-all waistline, these brands get it:

  • 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 Good American – Founded with curves in mind, their jeans stretch without losing shape and come in extended sizing.

  • 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 Silver Jeans “Suki” or “Elyse” – Designed for curves, with room in the hips and thighs and a no-gap waistband.

  • 🇨🇦 🇺🇸American Eagle: Comes in all jean styles. *size down when stretched material!

  • 🇺🇸 Madewell “Curvy Fit” – Designed for women with a smaller waist and fuller hips/thighs—no pinching or awkward gaps.

  • 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 Warp + Weft “Plus Fit” or “Curvy Cut” – Affordable, inclusive, and surprisingly luxe-feeling.

  • 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans) – Their lift-tuck technology is magic for smoothing without squeezing.

For Tall Women:

If you’ve ever tried on a “regular” pair of jeans and ended up with awkward high-waters—you are not alone.

Here’s who’s doing it right:

  • 🇨🇦 Aritzia “TNA & Denim Forum” – Some cuts go up to 34" inseam, and the quality is incredible for long legs.

  • 🇺🇸 Madewell “Tall” and “Tall Curvy” – Thoughtful tailoring in longer inseams (up to 37"), ideal for tall or long-torso gals.

  • 🇺🇸 🇨🇦Gap “Tall” Line – Classic styles in extended lengths and budget-friendly, too.

  • 🇺🇸 Everlane – Many of their denim styles come in Ankle, Regular, and Tall versions.

  • 🇺🇸 🇨🇦American Tall -inseam starts at 34”

Stylist Tip for Tall Women: Stores often don’t carry tall jeans in person—so online is your best bet. Read reviews, check inseam lengths, and always confirm return policies before committing. I always recommend ordering 2–3 sizes when trying a new brand, then returning what doesn’t work. It’s less frustrating and way more efficient in the long run.

How to wear jeans at 45?

Here’s the truth: you can wear any jeans you love. But to make them feel modern and flattering:

  • Pair a high-rise pair of jeans with a half-tucked blouse or sweater for easy polish.

  • Add structure: think of a blazer, a cropped jacket, or a tucked-in shirt.

  • Don’t be afraid of a little heel—it lengthens your look. Especially a pointed-toe

  • Go monochrome: dark denim with a black top is always slimming and sleek.

  • Add texture and accessories—a belt, a scarf, great earrings.

And yes—you can wear bold jeans.
Jeans with pearls, gems, or embellishments? Rock them! The key is to keep the rest of your look clean and simple so the jeans do the talking. Try a fitted neutral top or a crisp button-down to balance the sparkle. Confidence is your best accessory.

Don’t sleep on white jeans either.
They’re fresh, chic, and timeless—especially with a nude heel or sandal. In cooler months, pair with soft neutrals or camel tones for that quiet-luxury vibe. They’re not just for summer anymore.

Age doesn’t limit your style. It elevates it.

What jeans do you wear if you have a big tummy?

First of all, there’s nothing wrong with a soft tummy. But if you want a smoother silhouette:

  • Look for high-rise styles with tummy panels.

  • Stretch denim that doesn't sag or gap is your best friend.

  • Try NYDJ’s Marilyn Straight, Wit & Wisdom’s Ab-solution, or Spanx Denim—yes, they make jeans, and yes, they’re magic.

What jeans make you look slimmer?

Dark wash, high-rise, and a long inseam = instant legs for days. Avoid whiskering or fading around the hips and thighs. Stick with clean lines and minimal back-pocket detailing.

Styles to try:

  • Kut from the Kloth Natalie Bootcut

  • Levi’s 724 High Rise Straight

  • Good American Good Legs

  • Dynamite Clothing, Heidi Hi-rise

What jeans suit me?

Ah, the age-old question: What jeans actually suit me?

The truth is, it’s not about chasing trends—it’s about finding the fit that celebrates your body just as it is right now. That means paying attention to your shape, proportions, preferences, how you want to feel, your lifestyle, and yes, sometimes your height too (especially if you’re tall—more on that in a sec).

  • If you’re curvy (with hips and booty): Look for contoured waistbands, a little stretch, and mid-to high-rise cuts that won’t gap in the back. Brands like Good American, Wit & Wisdom, and Try a contoured waistband like Silver Jeans’ Suki Mid Rise. were made for you.

  • If you carry weight in your tummy: A higher rise is your best friend. Look for jeans with smoothing panels (like SPANX or NYDJ) and avoid anything too tight at the waistband—it’ll just create lines you don’t want.

  • If you’re more straight or athletic: Try styles that add a little shape, Add curves with flares or jeans that have pocket shaping.—like a flare or wide leg.

Brands like Levi’s, Madewell, or Everlane do this well, especially with a structured waist and hip fit. If you’re petite: Don’t overlook cropped styles—they’re often the perfect full-length jeans on shorter legs. Bonus points if you find a petite line (hello Kut from the Kloth petites!

  • If you’re tall: Now let’s talk, because I see you. Finding jeans with a proper inseam is no joke when most stores max out at 32”. It’s frustrating, and frankly, unfair. Tall women often get left out of the denim conversation.

The key here is to shop online from brands that offer long inseams (think 34” or more)—but it takes a little patience. Read the reviews, take your measurements (inseam, rise, hip, waist—the whole thing!), and make sure the store has easy returns. Honestly, buying two to three different sizes and returning what doesn’t work is a smart strategy until you know your go-to fit. Once you find your brand, you’re golden.

Check out GAP, Madewell Tall, Americal Tall and Levi’s Tall lines—many of my taller clients swear by them once they dial in their size.
